William Flanagan, 82, of Jacksonville, died June 20, 2012, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, D.C.  Funeral will be held 12:00 noon at Saint Julia AME Zion Church with Rev. E. C. Dobson officiating.

Burial will follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

Flag was a native of Benham, Kentucky, but spent his childhood in Mobile, Alabama.

 “Flag” joined the United States Marine Corps at an early age, where he met his wife of 55 years, Rachel M. Johnson Flanagan of          Richlands, North Carolina.    

“Flag” retired from the United States Marine Corps in 1971 as a       Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt) and began a new career as a civil service employee holding the same position of Bulk Fuel Manager. Because of military related disabilities, Flag retired again from Civil Service after a 10 year tenure and began a lighter career as a driver for the Onslow County Senior Services.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rachel M. Johnson Flanagan; his parents, William C. Flanagan, Sr. and Elsie Thomas;  two sisters, Frances Funches and Jeanette Jackson. 

“Flag” leaves to cherish his memories, two children, one son Eddie Johnson (Brenda) of Jacksonville, NC and one daughter, Carleen Flanagan Atkinson (Walter) of Woodbridge VA; two grandchildren, Latisha Johnson and Jamarr Dale; four siblings, Samuel Lee Flanagan, Mobile Alabama, Ronald Flanagan, Palm Springs, CA, Althea      Alexander, Gardena, CA and Patricia Curry, Los Angeles CA; and a host of nieces and nephews. He also leaves, three very special Marine Corps buddies, whom he spoke with daily, GySgt (Ret) Fred Mitchell,  SgtMaj (Ret) William H. Gaddie and MSgt (Ret) Thomas Roberson.

The Family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m. Sunday, June 24, 2012 at Saunders Funeral Home, 210 Bell Fork Road Jacksonville, NC.
